Feature: Watches & Wonders 2024 | New from Patek Philippe
The master watchmakers at Patek Philippe have brought us one of their best-ever world timers, as well as a new white-gold Nautilus and a Golden Ellipse that’s paired with a bracelet for the first time. A predictably refined selection from the revered brand.
Patek Philippe Nautilus, reference 5980/60G
Patek Philippe couldn’t release a new batch of watches without including at least one Nautilus. For 2024 we have a stunning new white-gold version of the popular 5980, a self-winding flyback chronograph.
Featuring a stylish opaline blue-grey dial, this colour is echoed on the blue-grey denim-patterned calfskin strap. It also comes with an additional blue-grey composite material strap with fabric pattern so you can switch it up for the hotter months.
As with previous 5980 models, the chronograph indications are grouped in a legible large 6 o'clock monocounter with three concentric scales. For a running seconds display, you can use the central chronograph seconds hand. It runs on the brand’s tried-and-tested Caliber CH 28 520—complete with gold rotor—visible through the exhibition caseback.
Patek Philippe World Time, reference 5330G-001
Patek Philippe is renowned for its world time watches, having pretty much defined the genre in the late 1930s. This 5330G is essentially a more advanced version of the discontinued 5230G, adding a patented world-first function: a date display synchronized with local time, with no need for manual correction.
Another first for Patek is the transparent glass date hand with a red-lacquered hammer-shaped tip, which points to the date on the periphery of the dial without obstructing the view—a nice touch.
The centre of the blue-grey dial features a carbon motif for added texture and the exhibition case back reveals the new Caliber 240 HU C movement with the signature Patek Philippe gold micro-rotor.
This watch isn’t entirely new, having been launched as a limited edition at Tokyo’s Watch Art exhibition in June last year. But devoted Patek fans will be pleased this one will now be more easily available.
Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse, reference 5738/1R-001
This milestone Patek Philippe release marks the first time the large-sized Golden Ellipse 5738 has come on a metal bracelet, making it a significant release.
Composed of links set in fine rows, this elegant rose-gold chain-style bracelet comprises 363 elements, of which more than 300 links were individually mounted by hand. The bracelet pays tribute to the 1970s—a time when the Golden Ellipse played a starring role.
The ebony-black sunburst dial is enhanced by applied baton-type hour markers and slim cheveu-type hands in rose gold. This timeless design perfectly sums up the spirit of Patek’s Golden Ellipse.
The classic “squoval”-shaped case houses the ultra-thin self-winding 240 calibre with a 48-hour power reserve—more than adequate for a dress watch.
