Feature: These Are The BEST Retro Chronographs Out There
The chronograph watch is a sought-after timepiece thanks to its links to motorsport racing, as well as its oh-so-cool design, putting it at the top of collectors’ wish lists the world over. This popular style of watch certainly stays true to the classic designs of the 20th century. With that said, we’ve picked out some of our favourite chronographs, both genuine vintage models and contemporary ones that ooze retro appeal. You’ll want them all!
Rolex Daytona 6263
The 6263 was manufactured from 1971 to 1988 and to this day remains one of the most desirable models in the Rolex Daytona collection. With ties to Paul Newman—although some regard the 6239 as the only true Paul Newman dial—this model boasts the protruding classic screw-down pushers that have become so associated with the Daytona ‘look’, as well as those classic white sub dials that pop against the black dial.
Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch ST 105.003-63
A part of the watch collection that made it to the moon, the aptly named Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch is a legendary timepiece and the jewel in Omega’s crown. This vintage Omega dates to the mid-1960s making it nearly sixty years old, plus, it’s considered one of the first models from the third generation Speedmasters, the reference 105.003. Despite its age, this is a charming watch that’s brimming with vintage appeal and certainly one that has a story to tell.
Hamilton American Classic H38716731
All-American watchmaker Hamilton offers up a handsome chronograph via this American Classic model, plus, it won’t break the bank either—it’s a win-win! Featuring two sub dials at 3 and 9 o’clock and a date window at 6 o’clock, this piece has a well-balanced dial in a classic black and white colourway. The black laser-cut leather strap adds to the sporty look of the watch, too, which wouldn’t look out of place on the racetrack.
Montblanc 1858 Small Seconds 117836
Although originally founded on the production of pens—or “writing instruments” as Montblanc itself puts it—this 1858 Small Seconds chronograph proves that Montblanc isn’t a watchmaker to be sniffed at. With a retro design reminiscent of vintage pilot’s watches, thanks to the large numerals, bulky pushers and crown, this is a fine watch from a creator of quality luxury goods.
Tudor Heritage Black Bay M79350-0005
Rolex’s sister brand Tudor offers us a chronograph, not from fifty years ago but, well, just two years ago. This 2020 model Heritage Black Bay does make us feel as though we’re dabbling in a by-gone era, though, thanks to those classic large pushers and crown and the understated brown leather strap. This is a rugged looking chronograph from a dark horse within the watchmaking industry.
