Feature: Panerai unveils fantastic five at Watches & Wonders 2024
Panerai has unveiled its latest state-of-the-art timepieces at this year’s Watches and Wonders, and fans of its Submersible range in particular will be thrilled by these new debutants. From high-tech new materials to the very first tourbillon in a Submersible model, the brand has taken another leap forward.
Panerai Submersible Tourbillon GMT Luna Rossa 45mm Experience Edition PAM01405
With its celebrated aquatic heritage, Panerai is the perfect watch brand to form a relationship with the America’s Cup. It first became an official partner of this elite sailing event in 2017, later becoming a sponsor of the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team.
This GMT tourbillon model with its stunning skeletonised dial is set to make its debut in July this year in the run-up to the America’s Cup finals.
Produced in extremely limited numbers (only 20 pieces), its case is fashioned from Carbotech—a composite material based on carbon fibre that draws inspiration from the team’s Luna Rossa boat.
This is the first Submersible in 45mm to feature a tourbillon and also the first of its kind to marry the complexity of this revered mechanism with the futuristic appeal of Carbotech.
The watch is powered by Panerai’s P.2015/T manual-wind movement whose two spring barrels provide an impressive power reserve of four days (the power reserve indicator can be seen through the exhibition caseback).
It also offers a water resistance of 300 metres, meaning it can take pretty much whatever the ocean throws at it. Best of all, if you buy this watch you’ll receive an invite to take part in a once-in-a-lifetime experience curated by the brand during the finals of the America’s Cup in Barcelona.
Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro Luna Rossa Ti-Ceramitech 44mm, PAM01466 and PAM01543
These two time-and-date Submersible models feature Panerai’s incredible Ti-Ceramitech material, created via an innovative titanium ceramization process that’s not only exceptionally tough but generates a unique tone of blue.
The material is 44 per cent lighter than steel and boasts a fracture toughness 10 times higher than standard ceramic.
The two watches are differentiated by their dials—blue sun-brushed on the reference PAM01466 and white grained matt on the PAM01543.
Both feature Panerai’s tried-and-tested Caliber P.900 automatic movement found across a range of other Submersible models, as well as the Luminor line.
Demonstrating impressive attention to detail, Panerai has matched the unique blue hue of the case with its bi-material strap. These models come with a huge 500 metre water resistance.
Submersible GMT Luna Rossa Titanio 42mm PAM01507
This Submersible GMT also pays homage to the 37th America’s Cup, taking place in Barcelona later this year, as well as the brand’s partnership with the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli sailing team.
It features the new Super-LumiNova X2 on the indices and hour hand—an improved grade that ensures luminosity 10% higher than its predecessor after 180 minutes in the dark.
Sporting the team’s colours of navy-blue and red, this Submersible GMT looks suitably nautical and boasts an impressive water resistance of 500 metres. Not only will it satisfy the needs of sailors, but jetsetters, too, thanks to its GMT function—allowing you to track two time zones simultaneously.
Like several other sailing-inspired watches lately, the Submersible GMT Luna Rossa features a 42mm titanium case, making it corrosion-resistant and extremely light on the wrist. The navy-blue bi-material rubber strap oozes sporty-chic and features the Luna Rossa red stripe.
At the heart of this model is the automatic P.900/GMT movement, a calibre renowned for its reliability and “weekend-proof” 3-day power reserve.
Submersible Luna Rossa 42mm PAM01565
The Submersible Luna Rossa 42mm PAM01565 was developed by the Laboratorio di Idee (“Laboratory of Ideas”) at the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel. It’s another piece that celebrates Panerai’s partnership with the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team.
At first glance, the PAM01565 looks very similar to the aforementioned Submersible GMT PAM01507, although there are some differences.
The PAM01565 features a 42mm steel case and boasts a grey and blue colourway with red accents on the strap—via the Luna Rossa red stripe—and the hand of the small-seconds dial. The steel and black ceramic bezel means it’s more resistant to scratches than metal. Plus, it’s water-resistant to a hardy 300 metres.
Like the Submersible GMT model, this watch runs on the P.900 calibre, boasting a 3-day power reserve.
This is a special-edition Panerai limited to just 300 pieces, available online only. So, you’d better be quick if you want to get your hands on this highly desirable Submersible model.
