Reissues of anything are a bit of a double-edged sword. Those who never managed to get their hands on the original release get a second chance, but for those collectors who bagged it the first time around, it can be a little, well… jarring—as that rare vintage piece doesn’t seem so unique anymore. One watchmaker that has been dishing out reissues left, right and centre recently is Longines, allowing fans of its vintage pieces to get in on the action. Below, we take a look at three of them and see how they compare to the originals.
Longines Heritage Classic Chronograph 1946
A new interpretation of the Heritage collection, the Classic Chronograph 1946 is a reissue of a model from the late 1940s. Back then, Longines was continually creating elegant luxury watches at the forefront of cutting-edge technology. This updated version implements the brand’s interest in technology, featuring a self-winding chronograph movement—calibre L895.5—developed exclusively for Longines.
Longines Heritage Legend Diver 7042 Reissue
Rooted in diving from the 1960s, the Legend Diver came about just as diving as a sport was entering its hey-day. Jump to 2007, then, and Longines chose to rerelease the iconic 7042 reference of the Legend Diver, with the model’s original Super Compressor design still intact. There have also been some new iterations to the modern LLD, including a Milanese bracelet version in 2017 and the new calibre L888—which boasts a 64-hour power reserve—in 2019.
Longines Avigation Type A-7 1935
From the depths of the ocean to the heights of the sky now, with the Avigation range. First introduced back in 1935, the Type A-7 was created for US Army pilots and allowed them to quickly read the time in life-threatening situations during combat. The most prominent feature of this watch is the skewed 40-degree angle dial and crown at 12 o’clock—both of which have, of course, reached the reissue which arrived in 2016. This model also flaunts an updated chronograph movement—the L788.2—as well as a matt black dial and brown leather strap.
