Pre-Owned Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Watches
Established 1833
The Reverso was first created in the 1930s for polo players, who needed a way of protecting the delicate crystal of their watches during high-energy games. Rectangular-shaped and elegant, the Reverso has a unique feature: the watch’s dial can be flipped by its wearer to reveal either a second dial or a simple closed caseback.
Reverso History
The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso, a name synonymous with luxury and elegance, has a captivating backstory that dates back to the 1930s.
British officers stationed in India were accustomed to the crystal of their watches getting smashed during polo matches. This complaint was passed on to a visiting maker of gold dentures called Cesar de Trey, who in turn told his friend Jacques-David LeCoultre, scion of the Swiss watchmaking family of the same name.
LeCoultre and a Parisian watchmaker called Edmond Jaeger then joined forces with an engineer called Rene Alfred Chauvot. They designed a unique watch whose case could be slid in its support and flipped over so that the dial-side faced down, thus protecting it from harm. What was once an early, robust sports watch is now considered an Art Deco masterpiece.
Although it was not in continuous production from its initial launch, the Reverso has gained icon status since the brand reintroduced it to its line-up in the 1980s. It is now Jaeger-LeCoultre’s flagship watch, having evolved into a symbol of sophistication, revered for its distinctive rectangular shape and Art Deco-inspired design.
The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso's versatility contributes to its iconic status. Jaeger-LeCoultre has released an array of variations over the years, each with its own unique attributes and complications. From basic time-only models to intricate tourbillons and chronographs, the Reverso caters to a wide range of tastes and preferences.
The Reverso also offers a diverse selection of materials and finishes. Whether you’re seeking a classic stainless-steel case or a luxurious gold one, the Reverso has something for everyone. You can also customise your watch with a choice of dial colours, strap options, and even personalised engravings. Indeed, the plain caseback of the watch has often been used for creative expression, whether decorated with enamel by the manufacturer or engraved with a meaningful inscription by the owner.
By investing in a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso, you are acquiring more than just a watch; you are owning a piece of horological history. With its timeless design, exceptional craftsmanship, and reputation for excellence, the Reverso continues to enthrall watch enthusiasts worldwide.
These include many celebrities who appreciate its unique design and historical significance. Famous Reverso wearers over the years include Leonardo DiCaprio, Lenny Kravitz and Matt Damon. Don Draper, the character played by Jon Hamm in the award-winning TV series Mad Men, also wears a Reverso.
